Dear Summer Reading Friends

It is now July and the days are long and sometimes beautifully lazy.  One of my favorite activities is to take a book to the patio, along with a cold drink, and read in the shade.

I want to share one of my favorite reads for you to enjoy this summer.  It’s a zany adventure that once you get lost in it, you will find nearly impossible to put down.  It’s a fabulous mix of fantasy, reality and humor.  A perfect summerread!

The Big Bazoohley
By Peter Carey

The first paragraph (to catch your attention):
Like most grown-ups, Sam Kellow's parents never guessed that their son ever thought about money.  Like most grown-ups, they thought he did not appreciate its value, and they both said things to him like: "Money doesn't grow on trees" and "If you knew how much that cost you wouldn't do that."   But in truth Sam knew a lot about how much things cost, and when the family arrived in Toronto in the middle of a blizzard, he knew they were there to sell his mother's latest painting to the mysterious Mr. Edward St. John de Vere.  He also knew they were down to their last fifty-three dollars and twenty cents.

A Synopsis (to tease you a bit more):
Wearing his 'Sonic the Hedgehog' pajamas, Sam Kellow sleep-walks out of the hotel room in Toronto where he is staying with his parents...and wakes to find the door firmly closed behind him.  Exploring the hotel hallway, Sam meets Nasty Muriel, Droopy George and their chickenpox-covered son, Wilfred.

How Sam gains his opportunity to win the Big Bazoohley... the big Jackpot … and save his family's finances is hilarious.

But our adventure doesn’t end with just a good read.  Look for another email from me in a few weeks.   If you choose to read the book, I have an activity for you to complete at home and bring to our Family Brunch in August.

Happy Reading!
Mrs. Kimball
