Faculty Spotlight: Devon Colby
WSD Director of Music
An east coast “Jersey girl” at heart, I graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, with my undergraduate degree in German and Music and my graduate degree in Education. I have taught General Music, German, English, Orchestra, Guitar and Choir for 28 years in the public schools of Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah, most recently as the Music Department Chair at The American Preparatory Academy in Draper and West Valley City.I am excited to be on the professional staff at Weilenmann. I have a wealth of experience as an orchestral and operatic performer and master teacher. I am an active teacher of advanced violin, viola and bass in the Suzuki Association of Utah and plan to institute the first ever Suzuki violin program in a Utah public school for grade levels K–3 at the Weilenmann School. I also have some creative ideas to discover how to play some unusual instruments (ukulele, bagpipe chanters, native American drums) at the 4-5 grade levels. Of course, all children will be accessing their own natural instrument first: their beautiful singing voices, which will serve as their connection to the instrumental music experience at the Weilenmann School.
I was attracted to the “Discovery” philosophy of WSD, as I am an avid traveler, love foreign languages, world culture and the great outdoors. I live in Murray with my husband Harv, who is a science and music educator in the Granite School District. We have two sons, Neal (15) and Carlton (13) and three cats. We spend our summers up on Wyanoke Island in the St. Lawrence River in New York, where we enjoy hiking, boating, swimming, fishing, reading, “jamming,” and relaxing. Between the four of us, we play 22 instruments! We enjoy sharing our talents with students, friends, family and all who will listen—as music brings us all together in a community of shared emotion and joy!
