Faculty Spotlight: Michelle Smietana

WSD Fifth Grade Teacher

I am elated to be part of the Weilenmann educational team. I am excited about the opportunity, and look forward to meeting everyone in person, especially my new fifth grade class.

I have taught at the Middle School level for 17 years, and every year has contributed experiences that help me with the next year’s class. I am originally from Chicago, Illinois, where I attained both my Bachelor’s and Master’s in Elementary Education. I taught for 10 years in the suburbs of Chicago, before deciding to move west to be closer to my family. I am looking forward to my move from Phoenix to Park City for both professional and personal reasons. My philosophy of education and that of Weilenmann are in complete agreement. I believe in giving students the opportunity to discover and create their own learning, with guidance and support. Moving to Park City also comes with the benefit of being a part of the daily lives of my two beautiful nieces.

In my spare time, I enjoy hiking with my dog, Dakota, reading, hanging out with family and friends, and finding a good deal. Recently, I have also incorporated running into my recreational time. Last year I completed two half-marathons, and am currently training for my third. Although, skiing might take the place of running this year!

The 2010-2011 school year is going to be great, and I look forward to meeting the students, parents, and faculty that will help make it a success.
